When Being Strong Gets Heavy
June's Newsletter & Special Offer For Guys!
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes not from doing too much, but from carrying too much for too long.
Being the strong one.
The dependable one.
The one who keeps everything together.
The one everyone leans on.
From the outside, these people often appear capable, steady, and resilient. They show up. They work hard. They care deeply for others. They keep moving forward through difficult seasons.
But underneath that strength, many are carrying far more than anyone realizes.
As we move into June and celebrate Father’s Day, I find myself thinking about the hidden emotional weight so many people carry — not just fathers, but mothers, caregivers, helpers, partners, and high-functioning people who have spent years putting everyone else’s needs ahead of their own.
Sometimes strength becomes so familiar that we stop questioning its cost.
Eventually, the nervous system sends us a bill.
The Men We Love
For generations, many men were taught to handle emotions privately.
They learned how to provide, protect, solve problems, and persevere.
What many were never taught was how to process grief, fear, loneliness, disappointment, pressure, or overwhelm in healthy ways.
Depression in men does not always look like sadness.
Sometimes it looks like:
irritability
emotional withdrawal
working excessively
increased alcohol use
numbness
difficulty relaxing
loss of motivation
physical tension and exhaustion
The message many received was simple:
“Handle it.”
But healing was never meant to be a solo endeavor.
If there is a man in your life you care about, consider asking questions that go deeper than surface conversation.
Instead of:
“How’s work?”
Try:
What’s been weighing on you lately?
What are you carrying that nobody sees?
What would make life feel easier right now?
And if you’re the one carrying the load, know this:
You do not have to earn support by reaching a breaking point.

The Exhaustion of Holding It All Together
One of the most common things I hear in my work is:
“I’m fine. I’m just tired.”
But often that exhaustion runs much deeper than lack of sleep.
It is the fatigue that comes from constantly managing, anticipating, helping, fixing, caregiving, problem-solving, and carrying emotional responsibility for everyone around you.
Many high-functioning people become experts at overriding their own needs.
Hungry? Keep going.
Overwhelmed? Push through.
Need rest? Maybe later.
Need support? Handle it yourself.
Over time, this creates a disconnect between what the body needs and what the mind believes it “should” do.
The result can look like:
anxiety
burnout
brain fog
chronic tension
emotional reactivity
difficulty concentrating
feeling disconnected from yourself
The nervous system was never designed to stay in survival mode indefinitely.
Strength matters.
But flexibility is healthier.
The healthiest nervous systems know how to move between effort and rest, giving and receiving, doing and simply being.
Safety Is a Feeling
Many people spend years trying to think their way into feeling better.
But safety is not an intellectual experience.
It is a physiological one.
Your nervous system is constantly asking:
“Am I safe?”
When stress becomes chronic, the body can remain stuck in protective states long after the original danger has passed.
This is not weakness.
It is biology.
Healing often begins not by forcing ourselves to feel differently, but by creating small experiences that help the body remember safety again.
Sometimes that looks like:
deep breathing
spending time in nature
calming music
trusted connection
gentle movement
guided imagery
meditation
sound healing
therapeutic touch
Small moments of safety repeated consistently can create profound shifts over time.
You do not need to fix your entire life today.
You only need to create one moment where your nervous system can exhale.

Reflection Questions
Where in my life am I carrying more than I need to?
What emotions have I been avoiding?
What would support look like if I allowed myself to receive it?
When do I feel most safe, grounded, and like myself?
What responsibility can I set down this month?
When did I first learn I needed to be “the strong one”?
Have I confused being needed with being loved?
What would a healthier version of strength look like in this season of my life?
Remember, strength is not about carrying everything alone.
True resilience includes knowing when to rest, when to receive support, and when to allow yourself to be cared for.
When being strong becomes your identity, it can become difficult to recognize when you’re suffering.
This Month’s Affirmation
I am allowed to rest before I am exhausted.
I am allowed to receive support before I reach my limit.
My worth is not measured by how much I carry.
I can be both strong and supported.
It is safe for me to feel my emotions.
With warmth,
Anita
